Installing
WBT Manager™
under
Personal Web Server
Mark Schupp, Head of Development, Integrity eLearning
When evaluating WBT Manager for purchase it may not be convenient to set up a full web server. This can often involve multiple departments and require capital expenditure. It is possible to install the WBT Manager web-server application to run under a copy of Microsoft Personal Web Server. The remainder of this document describes how.
1. Install Personal Web Server.
Obtain a copy of the NT Option pack (the version of PWS on the Windows 98 CD should work as well)
NT Option pack is available at http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/default.aspInstall Personal Web Server
2. Install the WBT Manager web-server application
Run setup.exe from the web server application directory on the WBT Manager CD or the downloaded installation set. You may receive a message stating that your version of Microsoft Data Access Components needs to be upgraded. If so you can get the latest version of MDAC from http://www.microsoft.com/data/ . MDAC 2.1 is available in the utilites\database\mda2 directory on the CD.
Select a destination directory when prompted (default is c:\wbtroot). Note the directory for later.
When prompted for a "Data Source" select Default WBT Manager database (MS Access).
When prompted for a DSN enter the desired Data Source Name (default is WBT Manager Database).
3. Install the WBT Manager system administrator
Run setup.exe from the administrator module directory on the WBT Manager CD or the downloaded installation set.
When prompted for the "Data Source" select Pre-existing data source and click "Next". Then select the Data Source Name used in installing the web-server application (above).
4. Install your license key
Launch the WBT Manager System Administrator from the Start/Programs/WBT Manager menu. An error message will be displayed and you will be prompted for your license key. Enter the license key exactly as it appears on your license documentation.
5 Create a virtual directory under Personal Web Server
Start Personal Web Manager from the Start/Programs/Internet/Microsoft Personal Web Server menu.
Click on Advanced to view the available virtual directories.
Select <Home> and then click Add....
For Directory, enter the path where you installed the WBT Manager web server application.
Enter an alias to represent the directory in the URL ("wbtmanager" for example).
Make sure that the Read, Execute, and Scripts checkboxes are checked and click Ok.
You can now access the local copy of WBT Manager from the web browser. The
URL will look like:
http://localhost/wbtmanager.
Substitute the alias you used for the virtual directory for
wbtmanager.
